As I know you have all seen already, we made gingerbread houses last week in class. King Arthur Flour generously donated enough kits for each student to decorate his/her own. We opened up the wall between the two First Grade classrooms and had a decorating party. It was a ton of fun. The following day, we mapped out the town of Hartford and each student was able to place their house on the map. We talked about our community and how we all are connected. Community Helpers
Our community helpers unit has begun. We are taking a look at what a community is and what is a community helper. This week we focused on our Dothan Brook School community. Students identified people they felt makes DBS safer, healthier, cleaner and a better place. Here are some of their profile pictures.
Ginger Bread House
Thanks to the very generous donations of candy, we had a great selection to choose from when decorating our ginger bread house this week. We had so much fun!

School-Wide Reward: Inside Out on the Big Screen
Today, while snuggled in our PJs, we spread out on our cozy blankets and enjoyed the movie Inside Out in the gym with the entire school. We had a great time! It was a great send-off to Thanksgiving break. I hope everyone has a wonderful week with family and friends.
Learning About Pilgrims
For the past two weeks, we have been studying Pilgrims. Students took a closer look at how Pilgrims came to live in America as well as what life was like for Pilgrims once they were here. We compared their lives to our lives today. As a part of their learning, students created a class book.

Turkey Time
We are getting into the Thanksgiving feeling in school this week. We took down our Fall bulletin board and replaced it with out Thankful Turkey. Each student designed a feather to add to our turkey, stating one thing they are thankful for. Each student also create a smaller turkey.
Leap Frog Math
Yesterday we celebrated our 50th day in school! We played Leap Frog while counting by 10s to 50. Everyone had a great time hopping over one another as well as being the counting blocks.

Drop It: A New Math Game
Today we made and played Drop It. First, each student took 10 popsicle sticks and added one dot to the middle of each one. Next, they flipped each stick over and added ten dots (5 on each end) to the other side. To play the game, students pick up the bundle of sticks and drop them. As they fall, they either end up on their side of 10 dots or side of 1 dot. Students then count the amount of dots they see. This will help build their understanding of tens and ones. This is a quick and easy game students can play by themselves or against a partner. I would encourage any family that can, to build these sticks and play this game at home.

Author Study and Writing Pieces
We have been working really hard on our writing skills. Typically, we read a story together and then students are asked to answer a question related to the text, requiring them to use evidence from the text to support their writing. This week, students had to decide whether or not they would be a character's friend. Students took notes on the story then used those notes to write an opinion piece.

Class Council with Mrs. Lallier
To gear up for our annual bully-prevention day next week, our class council focus this week was around bullying and how to stand up when faced against it. Mrs. Lallier worked with the students to help the identify signs of bullying and who should be told when they see bullying occur.
*Reminder: This Thursday, October 22nd will be our Otters Don't Bully day. Please encourage your child to wear orange that day. Also, they are welcome to make signs to hold during Walk-n-Ride to school that morning.
Author Study: Kevin Henkes
This week we have been taking a closer look at various Kevin Henkes' books. We've read books such as "Wemberly Worries" and "Chrysanthemum". With each book we have had an extension project or writing piece. Our classroom and hallway is overflowing with Kevin Henkes inspired work.
