Due to circumstances at the Valley Terrace, we were unable to go on our field trip today. This field trip has been rescheduled for next Tuesday afternoon. A new permission slip will be going home in their Friday Folders.

Typically Day During the Farm Unit

Just a little insight to what our classroom looks like in the middle of the farm unit! It definitely gets a little messy in here!

Farm Unit & Plants!

Our farm unit is well underway! We are also doing a mini-unit on plants, their life cycle and the interdependence between plants and us.

Planting our own seeds! Hopefully they will sprout within a week or so!

Farm folders made and ready to go!

Field Trip to the Lebanon Opera House

We all had a great time going to see Charlotte's Web yesterday at the Lebanon Opera House!

Playing Catch-Up: Brain-O-Mania

Wow! Last week went by so quickly! Brain-O-Mania was a huge success on Friday night. Thank you to all of those who were able to attend.

Reminder- This week our class is trying to earn "reading otters". For every 15 minutes your child spends reading, he/she can get a reading otter to go in our class pond. At the end of the week, the class with the most otters will receive a pizza party!

Here is the newsletter from last week:

First Grade Narratives

Here is an audiobook of our narratives created before vacation! Feel free to listen through all of their stories, or simply skip through until your child is the reader.

Loving Every Minute of First Grade!

I could not be any prouder of my first graders than I am this week. They have been working so incredibly hard on their narrative writing! Each one of them began by creating a Story Map, outlining their plan, building their characters and creating their setting. From there, students wrote, revised, edited and rewrote their stories, each time making it stronger than the last. Much of this work required a lot of independence and self-motivation. This is where they completely blew me away and I truly love every minute I get to work with them. In addition to the writing, each student created a fictional character and a digital background to show where their stories were taking place. They truly are ROCK STAR students! Currently, each student is working on completing their final written draft as well as a typed-draft. We're hoping to create a digital audio book after vacation in which all of their stories can be showcased for you to see!

To top off this week, we also continued our focus of the moon. Each student will be bringing home a moon book they created. Inside the book, you will find each phase of the moon created by your child. They are getting really good at identifying each phase of the moon (even correcting me from time to time when I get waxing vs. waning confused). They will have a chance to see a Lunar Eclipse as well as a Full Moon over break! I'm hoping a few will be able to see them.

Lastly, I hope everyone has a wonderful April vacation. Can you believe we only have ~8 more school weeks left of this year? Where did the time go?

Volunteer Shout Out: Next Week

In preparation for our next math unit, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes prep work that needs to take place over the next week or so. If you have any available time to come in and help the 1st grade team with preparing this unit, please let me know. Any day/time that works for you, can work for us.

Thank You!

Hands-On Learning

This week we took a closer look at the moon, by creating our very own moons with paper mache. Today we were able to paint our moons in the Art Room. They turned out really great! Each student worked very hard. They were able to add glitter if they wanted to. It was very rewarding to walk around while they were working and hear them discuss how their moon was a crescent moon so they only added a little bit of glitter, or their moon was a full moon so they added glitter all over one side.

*Also, their life-size penguins and their clay penguins are coming home today!

Icky, Sticky, Moon!

Today each student (yes, all 17 of them) created a paper mache moon in class. Wow! This project was definitely interesting. I expected the mess and the chaos of it all, what I didn't anticipate was how many students didn't want to get "dirty". Many were very apprehensive to getting the water/flour mixture on their hands! It was quite funny to see. However, after a few minutes to adjust to the texture, everyone was able to dive right in. Their creations will dry over night, and tomorrow we will hopefully begin painting our moons.

After some hard work making a mess, we had to work extra hard to clean it up :-)

I hope they all turn out okay! We'll have to wait and see :-)
